Over Diagnosis
A number of conditions have become over diagnosed of late. This may be due to mild hysteria in the press, or simply the desire of GPs to produce a diagnosis in all circumsatnces. A few examples are outlined below:
ADHD
A controversial subject, but many professionals feel that this condition is invoked in cases where other behavioural problems are present, or the child's behaviour may be relatively normal. The problem then is that when a drug such as methylphenidate (Ritalin) is then prescribed, the child can be at risk of serious side effects such as insomnia, psychosis and slowing of growth through diminished appetite.
Irritable bowel syndrome
This phrase is used to describe a group of symptoms for which no cause can be found e.g. abdominal pain, bloating or altered bowel habit. As such any diagnosis risks excluding another condition with more well defined characteristics.
Middle ear infection
Over diagnosed in children as there can be a number of reasons for redness in the ear membranes. Antibiotics may then be prescribed needlessly.
Sinusitis
This diagnosis could be severity when inflammation may just be the result of a cold or asthma
Lyme disease
A tick borne infection that is becoming known, but as symptoms are vague and definitive diagnosis is difficult it may be becoming over diagnosed.
Alzheimer's
Now the most well known cause of mental degeneration with age, but this factor means that other conditions e.g. frontal lobe dementia, Lewy-body dementia, Pick's disease are completely overlooked.
