These tend to occur in the calf after surgery and can embolize to the lung with sever consequences. The number of deaths per year from blood clots is significant far outweighing other more widely publicised causes such as breast cancer or road accidents. Although the condition can occur at any time it is a particular hazard in a nursing situation. Prevention involves the use of anti-coagulants (heparin), support stockings and specific advice as to what to look out for (calf tenderness, swelling or warmth). However, there is no accepted systematic approach to the problem. The charity Lifeblood is campaigning on this issue.
