Clostridium difficile

Another gram +ve bacterium that is rod shaped and forms spores. In this case it is anaerobic and so found in the gut where oxygen levels are low. It coexists with normal intestinal flora in some healthy people, but may become problematic if antibiotics are used.

As harmless bacteria are killed, the resistant clostridium will multiply unopposed. The patient then develops diarrhoea, and ulceration of the bowel which leads to bleeding. Perforation of the gut can lead to extensive infection. This will again become critical in an already unwell patient. In a hospital situation it may be possible to become cross infected from another affected patient if hygiene standards are low.

Again this should not be the case in a well run hospital and so any claim should be conducted along the same lines as the MRSA example. Compensation will reflect pain and suffering suffered in excess of the underlying illness, which could be difficult to determine unless the patient is relatively healthy.
