Lack of awareness
A number of conditions are consistently under diagnosed by healthcare professionals through lack of awareness. a number of examples are detailed below:
Depression
Each year up to 40% of the population will have feelings of depressed mood/unhappiness and of these around 20% will show clinical features of depression e.g. low mood, lack of sleep, loss of appetite, suicidal thoughts. GPs will tend to focus on physical diseases and so the condition is often overlooked, especially if coexisting with a more obvious problem. The use of drug therapy has recently become but the risk of suicide suggests that many patients should be monitored closely.
Migraine
The misconception is that migraine sufferers should be in agony when suffering an attack, and so the condition is massively underdiagnosed. It is more common in women of reproductive age, but due to its prevalence it can be present in any sector of the population. Symptoms include headache, nausea, vomiting, and light sensitivity - which can be disabling. These attacks vary in frequency and severity, but drugs exist to treat both acute episodes, and to reduce attacks in the long term.
Otosclerosis
This is a hearing problem that appears in early adult life and is made worse by pregnancy. A change in bone structure causes conductive deafness (hearing better in background noise). Surgical replacement of teh stapes avoid the need for a hearing aid.
Sjögren's syndrome
Infectious diarrhoea
There are a number of infectious viral and parasitic diseases that are highly virulent. Generally a patient will put sudden onset diarrhoea and vomiting down to food poisoning i.e. ingestion of harmful bacteria or toxins, and treat by simply maintaining fluid intake and hygiene. In fact agents such as cholera will need specific drug therapies.
Lactose intolerance
This is more common in non caucasians and does cause clear digestive symptoms (. However, these may be put down to other conditions such as indigestion.
Polycystic ovarian syndrome
A common condition, that is poorly understood, but may be related to insulin resistance. The symptoms are hormonal on the menstrual cycle can be affected. There can also be infertility which can be treated.
Flat feet (pes planus)
Low foot arch, which can be painful. Few people will seek treatment
ADHD
This condition is now greatly over diagnosed in young people, but may still be under diagnosed in adults
Sleep disorders
Although a number of disorders may be obvious to an observer or the patient as they cause waking, conditions such as sleep apnoea may be harder to spot.
Asthma
A common condition characterised by shortness of breath, cough and wheeze. In different populations there are problems with diagnosis for example it may be over diagnosed in children yet under diagnosed in the old.
